5 Pragmatic Tips for Running an Effective RPA Pilot

First published: September 12, 2021 @ 6:00 pm

RPA, or Robotic Process Automation, is a technology that allows us to automate business processes that previously required a human operator.

In the past, RPA was used mostly for data entry and limited to small tasks. In the future, RPA is going to play a huge role in improving customer service and creating value for customers.

A pilot program is a phase in the RPA process where you start small and try out the technology. The process of setting up a pilot is called ‘RPA adoption’. There are three different types of pilots, continuous pilots, one-off pilots and project-based pilots.

Continuous Pilots

Continuous pilots are executed continuously without stopping. The pilot program is usually the first and most crucial phase in RPA adoption.

In continuous pilots, you need to learn how to use the technology to execute business processes in a way that will allow you to see the ROI. To do this, you need to know how many operations will be automated, how much time they will save and what type of operations will be automated.

One-off pilot

One-off pilots are short-term experiments that allow you to find out if your business process can be automated using RPA. It is usually used for testing specific business processes.

In one-off pilot program, it is also possible to use only a subset of the available functionality. In this case, all data has to be recorded manually so that when the process is completed and completed with all its actions performed, you can analyse it using data visualization tools.

Project-based pilot

Project-based pilots are used for large projects where you need an existing set of data before running the RPA pilot. A common example would be creating a full warehouse of product data to be used in a future project.

In this case, you need to prepare a data model that includes all the information required for the RPA pilot. The pilot program is usually done by a team of people who are experienced in data modelling and data integration.

Why do we need RPA pilots?

The main reason for RPA pilots is to ensure that the process that will be automated is repeatable and reliable. This will allow you to find out if your business process can be automated using RPA. It is also possible to find out if your business process can be automated using RPA, without doing a pilot program.

In RPA pilots, it is also possible to test new ideas and experiments with the technology. This way, you can find out if a new idea would be more effective than the one that you already have.

If your company has a history of success with automation, then a pilot will not cost much in terms of money or time. However, if your company has a history of failures when it comes to automation, then a pilot will cost more in terms of money and time.

A good idea for an initial pilot would be one that involves customer service. The goal of an initial pilot should be one that will result in significant savings in time and money without affecting the customer experience. This will allow you to increase your efficiency, reduce costs and decrease errors.

5 Pragmatic Tips for Running an Effective RPA Pilot

In order to be successful with RPA, you need to follow a few tips:

Tips #1. Get the right talent.

Most RPA pilots fail because they are managed by engineers that don’t understand the business. Engineers tend to be more technical and focus on the code and how it works. They don’t have a good understanding of business problems, which is important for RPA pilots.

The role of the RPA pilot is to learn how to use the technology. In order to do this, you need to have someone who has a good understanding of the business process that you want to automate. In most cases, this person will be in a customer service role or a sales role.

Tips #2. Be clear about what your goals are.

This is one of the most important tips for running an effective RPA pilot program. The main goal of any RPA pilot should be one that will result in significant savings in time and money without affecting the customer experience. If this goal is not met, then the pilot will not work as expected in the future.

You also have to make sure that your goal doesn’t involve complex processes to be done by RAP. This is because automation only works best when it comes to simple and repetitive tasks.

3. Make sure that the RPA pilot is repeatable.

In order for an RPA pilot program to be successful, it needs to be repeatable. If it is not repeatable, then it will be very difficult for you to use the technology in the future.

The reason for this is that every RPA project has different requirements and constraints. The more often you run a pilot, the more often you will have different requirements and constraints. Therefore, it will become difficult for you to make changes without making changes to your code.

To make sure that your RPA pilot is repeatable, make sure that there are as few dependencies as possible between what you do in your RPA pilots and what you do in your production environment.

You should also avoid too many external dependencies and complex processes. If an external dependency does not work or doesn’t work correctly in one environment, then it might not work correctly in another environment.
